GIANTS, MONSTERS, & DRAGONS... OH MY! Contest

I have a kind of sickness--a love for reference books. You're probably thinking no biggie. But I must POSSESS them. I don't know if there is therapy for people with this problem. But I just ran across one of my favorite idea sources and thought I'd turn to the masses to add to my ever-growing list of interesting mythological creatures for another blog contest. The book I'm referring to is Carol Rose's GIANTS, MONSTERS, & DRAGONS: AN ENCYCLOPEDIA OF FOLKLORE, LEGEND, AND MYTH. Rose's extensive collection of cultural information is incredibly inspiring. I can't remember my writing days before I got my hands on the book!

For my contest, I'm giving away an anthology of 3 shape-shifter stories classified as erotic romance. What else would werewolves be? The work is entitled HOWL. The authors are Jet Mykles, Jeigh Lynn, and Raine Weaver. This is an ARC I received last summer at a luncheon during the RWA National conference. And it will land in someone's hands just in time for summer vacation. Don't we all need some extra reading to idle away the time while lounging in a hammock on a serene Belize beach while the breeze whispers love songs...

All you need to do to be in the running is tell me what your favorite giant, monster, or dragon is by commenting to this blog. Please tell me the name and what is significant about the creature. The deadline is midnight CST, April 30th, 2008. I will draw a name out of a hat and announce the winner shortly thereafter. If you don't have time to check back to see who wins, just subscribe to this blog. I will post the winner here.

Know true peace! ~Skhye

Hi, When I was reading your email, I immediately thought of the movie "Pete's
Dragon!" I must have seen that movie at least five times and every time I cried!
I know that monster, dragons and giants should be huge, ugly, demanding creatures, but I am going with a dragon who helped a little boy out of his crisis. Pete came from an abusive home and the way he consoled himself was his imaginary friend, "Elliott." At the end, when Pete found a wonderful home, Elliott new he wasn't needed anymore and left to help some other child in need. Thanks for a delightful contest. Cindi

I love research books too and surround myself with them. As far as your 'creature' question goes, I vote for the Loch Ness Monster. I've always been fascinated with Nessie.
Onward in the quest for discovering Nessie.

You know I love all monsters in movies and in books. Each kind has their own type of appeal so choosing one is very difficult. My favorite would have to be shape shifters though I love reading about them, be they werewolves, silkies, or familiar.

My favorite monster would be the Stymphalean birds that Hercules fought in Greek mythology as his sixth labor. They stick out to me as my favorite because they are so unique. They have wings made of metal feathers that they use as arrows when they attack and beaks that can pierce anything. In fact Hercules couldn't kill them in his labor on his own but had to drive them away using noise clappers the gods gave him to drive them out of their trees and hiding places so he could shot them with his bow and kill them. Hope thats a good enough explanation.

I love vampires and I have always loved them. Just call me obsessed. They were my first true love as far as monsters go. They just have an allure that no other creatures have. Of course, the fact that they are immortal definitely helps. It is amazing how they have been represented over the years, how each movie or author has given them different traits and attributes. It's fascinating, really. How many other monsters have had so many different variations of themselves?

HI,one of my favorite mythological creatures are The Blue Men Of Minch.evil blue skinned mermen. they dwelt in caves in the stretch of water known as the minch. they enjoyed calling up thunderstorms to sink ships.the only way to defeat them was to come up with an original rhyme on the spot.they are sometimes called storm kelpies. It was also suggested that they were fallen angels.

My favorite would be the vampire. There's something erotic about biting the neck. The romantically tragic figure of the vampire, cursed to haunt the night, hunts or seduces his quarry seeking to quench the eternal thirst. Then at last, that moment of surrender when the tender neck is submissively revealed and the victim's willingness to be possessed, body and soul, ends in a climax with penetration and blood. This sensuality is what attracts me to the vampire.

I too love collecting reference books. I hardly ever read them but you never know when they might come in handy.

You want me to pick just one?
I'd say Werewolves are my most favorite but I also love dragons, the phoenix, and the Griffin.
