TAMAHA TALES--(Or, researching a 'gut feeling')

Hi everyone! I have kind of an odd research topic today. Because everything I write takes place in Oklahoma or Texas, and because I was born and raised in Oklahoma, most of my research tools are right at my fingertips. Talking to older people in the area, going to the actual places where my stories are set, and visiting museums and landmarks are all part of my research practices for just about all my novels. Louis L’Amour said that if he wrote about a creek or a particular landmark, it was authentic; that it was actually where he said it was, and looked the way he described it. I don’t quite go that far, but I try to keep the setting and every other component of my writing as true to life as possible. In order to do that, sometimes you just have to “be there.”

Tamaha, Oklahoma, was an unlikely candidate to be included in my story, FIRE EYES, until I visited there. But how its inclusion came about is a story in itself—and proves that sometimes our research, as that other saying goes, “happens.”

Though there’s very little to say about the actual town of Tamaha as it exists today, I couldn’t help but use it in my story, Fire Eyes, released in May 2009. In those long ago days of more than a century past when my story takes place, it was a thriving community.

There’s an odd thing that happened that made me include Tamaha in my book. I’d been working on it, and had come to the part where the villain and his gang needed to reference a landmark. But which one? And what was the significance? As I said, I try to stay as historically accurate in my writing as possible, and this story takes place in the eastern part of the state, toward the Arkansas/Oklahoma border. I must admit, I’m not as familiar with that part of the state as I am with the central part, since that’s where I was born and raised. A lot of these smaller towns don’t even dot the map, and I had never heard of Tamaha, until one day in May, 2005.

I’d just spoken with a lifelong friend, DaNel Jennings, who now lives in a town in that eastern area of the state. In the course of the conversation, she mentioned that she and her husband, Jeff, were doing some genealogical research and she had learned she had some relatives buried in a small cemetery in Tamaha. Now, the intriguing part of this was that her relatives bore the same last name as my maiden name, “Moss.”

“Wouldn’t it be funny if we really WERE related?” she asked. We’d always secretly hoped we were, and pretended that we were, when we were kids.

“Yes,” I responded with a laugh, “but where in the HECK is Tamaha?” (As if I would know.) She began trying to tell me where it was, and I said, “Never mind. It’s a good thing Jeff knows where he’s going. Let me know what you find.”

I hung up, wistfully wishing that I could go with her—but that was a three-hour drive and they were leaving the next day. No way I could take off and drive down there on the spur of the moment, with family obligations.

A couple of hours later, my sister Karen called. “Cheryl, I need you to come down this weekend,” she said. I was really intrigued, because she is my “much older” sister—10 years older—and never much “needed” me for anything before.

“What’s going on?”

“I promised Mr. Borin I would take him to visit the graves of his parents and siblings for Memorial Day, and two of his brothers are buried in a cemetery in Tamaha—”

I never heard the rest of her sentence. I was sure I had misunderstood. “Where?”

“Tamaha. And the others—”

Stunned, I interrupted her. “Wait, I have to tell you something.” I couldn’t believe it. I’d never heard of this place before, and now, within the space of 2 hours, two people who were very close to me had told me they were going to be going to the cemetery there!

Chills raced through my body. This was no mere “coincidence.” I promised her I would be there—no matter what—Friday afternoon. We would be going on Saturday morning.

I would never have found the place on my own. I doubt that Mapquest even has it on their site. But Mr. Borin, an older gentleman my sister had befriended in years past, knew exactly where to go. Once we got there, I stepped out and found the headstones for the “Moss” family. It was amazing to think that my best friend, DaNel, whom I had not seen in over a year, had been standing where I was just a few days earlier—a place neither of us had been before. Again, I wondered what our research through family ancestry would yield. Were we related, as we’d always hoped? There was an incredible sense of connection, for me, not only for what we were doing that day for Mr. Borin and his long dead relatives, but for what DaNel and I might discover about our own. (BTW, cemeteries are also one of my passions--great for research, just by reading the headstones and figuring out what happened.)

As the three of us, Karen, Mr. Borin, and I stood in the quiet peacefulness of the old cemetery, a man made his way toward us. “Can I help you?” he asked, introducing himself. We explained why we were there. “Let me show you the historical side of Tamaha while you’re here,” he said cheerfully. He had lived there all his life, and there was no detail about the once-thriving community and surrounding area that he didn’t know. He was glad to share his knowledge, and believe me, I was writing in my little notebook as fast as I could while he talked.

The cemetery is on a bluff overlooking the Arkansas River. “Right down there is where the J.R. Williams was sunk. She was a Confederate ship, but the Union seized her and changed the name to the J.R. Williams. But Stand Watie and his men seized her back.”(June 15, 1864) Our guide chuckled at the thought.

NOTE: (Stand Watie was one of only two Native American brigadier generals in the War Between the States. He was the last Confederate officer to lay down his arms, and was also Chief of the Cherokee Nation at the time.)

“Come on, I’ll show you the largest black oak tree in Oklahoma—and the oldest.” Sure enough, it stood towering over one of the first buildings of the settlement of Tamaha, dating back to the 1800’s.

Next, we visited the town jail, the oldest jail in Oklahoma, built in 1886. We were able to walk right into it and take pictures. “We’re trying to get money up to preserve it,” he said. It stood in the middle of an overgrown field. “Watch out for snakes, hon,” he told me. Yep, he didn’t have to tell me twice. My eyes were peeled.

When we left, I knew I had my landmarks that I needed for my book. I had seen it, and my imagination took over. It was the “jog” I needed to get on with the writing, but I will never believe for one minute that it was coincidence.

I use many research resources, but because of the nature of what I love to write—western romance—and because I have been so blessed to actually grow up in the area that I’m writing about, I feel like the most invaluable resource available to me are the people and places I meet and visit. It’s all around me.

One of the best “hands on” research places I’ve ever been is The National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum. I worked there for two years, and I loved every minute of it. The best advantage of working there was the fact that every morning when the doors opened, there was a whole new crowd of people to visit with, and yes, I carried a piece of paper and a pen in my pocket at all times. As for research books, I swallowed very hard and bought the complete set of Time/Life books about the West. I use it constantly. Another set of books that I have that really have been a great research tool have been Shelby Foote’s three-book series on the War Between the States. Very easy to read and full of rich detail that you wouldn’t find in a “regular history book.”

But my day of research at Tamaha is one that I will never forget, and that I’m so glad to have been able to take part in. Have any of you ever experienced anything like this? ***Wow! Talk about an interesting novel's evolution. The Native Texan that I am must admit I've never been to The National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum. I feel kind of deficient in my knowledge of Texas now... But hey, this is a place I can go on vacation!!! I LOVE your cover. And of course, this "remarkable occurrence that has affected your writing" is research. Memories are events. We draw from them. I shall be the boring anthropologist and note we can't create things from a black void. Our memory is a powerful database we use 24-7... So, don't think you didn't pull your weight in writing! Writing about 14th-C Europe: FOURTEENTH-CENTURY TOWNS~

I just stumbled upon the coolest reference book. If you're writing about the plague or 14th C Europe, you'll use FOURTEENTH-CENTURY TOWNS (edited by John D. Clare in the LIVING HISTORY series). The photography is incredible. And from the LIVING HISTORY note on the cover, the live people in the photographs indicates the photos are taken at living museums. The book is for children but has plenty to offer. You can develop a story around the topics and move on to do a bit more detailed research where necessary. And who wouldn't treasure a timeline or two? Lots of ideas here! ~Skhye

Primordial Ooze~

Corrina Lawson: Viking & Roman Alternate History

I have no idea what to call the genre I'm writing.

Dinah of Seneca is alternate history. And it features a romance story. But it's not fantasy because there's no magic. And the science in it already exists in our world. I just moved it back a few hundred years.

Ancient steampunk is likely the description that comes closest.

My alternate universe has Romans and Vikings in North America. And since I gave the Romans an extra five hundred years to rule the world, I also updated their technology. Roughly, they're at the same point that the British Empire was about the time America was colonized.

This means the Romans have gas lanterns. They have cannons. They have primitive hand grenades. They don't have guns yet because I decided gave them too much of an advantage in fights with the native tribes surrounding them.

I set the book I'm working on, Sky of Seneca, a sequel to Dinah of Seneca, in a Roman settlement at the tip of Manhattan. I modeled it on the original Dutch settlement of New Amsterdam that eventually grew into New York City.

When I started writing the book, the one thing I knew for sure about my hero, Ceti the engineer, is that he's obsessed with building a glider and flying.

So not only did I need some basic information about what Manhattan looked like before the Dutch got there, I needed to figure out the highest point on the tip of southern Manhattan where my hero could launch his glider.

This was not easy.

And then I found a book that I like to say was made *just for me.*

Mannahatta: A Natural History of New York by Eric W. Sanderson.

Not only does the book detail the original topography of Manhattan using a Revolutionary War era map and a lot of ingenius computer applications, but it also provides information about the flora and fauna, the water currents, and the natives who lived on the island.

The only part of the book that's not comprehensive is the native American history. Sanderson admits it's sketchy compared to the rest of the research but it was enough to get me started, especially combined with information on what would have been edible on the island.

Even better, the book has a website devoted to allowing visitors to take a virtual tour of ancient Manhattan. I wrote about it for Wired last year: http://www.wired.com/geekdad/2009/09/take-a-virtual-tour-of-ancient-manhattan/

The only research problem the book hasn't solved is how my Roman engineer launches his glider. I'd thought about having him leap off the Palisades cliffs but that seems a bit too stupid to live for an intelligent engineer. Instead, I did research on catapults and other ancient weapons and decided on a catapult-like device that launches my hero into the sky. The History Channel, with its programs on ancient weapons, were incredibly valuable for this.

I also used History Channel documentaries to shape the first book in the series, Dinah of Seneca, which is due out in May. The Chinese had some interesting hand-held black powder weapons that should prove a lot of fun at the climatic battle.

For the climatic battle in Dinah of Seneca, I went back to the memory of a visit I took a decade ago to Petersburg, Virginia. My husband and I walked the battlefield there and took particular interest in the remains of the Battle of the Crater. That's when Union soldiers tunneled under the Confederate lines, planted a lot of explosives, and blew up the enemy encampment.

Unfortunately, instead of going around the new crater and attacking the Confederates from the sides, ill-trained Union soldiers ran *into* the crater, become bogged down, and were slaughtered. So it was all for nothing. My armies don't make the same mistake.

I love writing romance because it's very satisfying to write people falling in love. But I also have a great deal of fun making up my own universe, picking and choosing what elements might go where and what would be obselete and what would be used instead. That goes for everything: food, clothing, shelter, language, politics. In this world, I get to play god, so to speak. Best. Job. Ever. ~Corrina

***Thanks, Corrina. I LOVE THAT COVER. I'm a huge fan of the History Channel. And I collect documentaries. It's some kind of sickness akin to studying the past so somebody remembers it... And I must say, methinks an engineer would try just about anything to test his design even if it meant hiring an idiot to be the test pilot. *snicker* Or maybe I torture my characters too much! I once had a geology professor who had an essay test question about building a dream home on an incline (side of a mountain). The problem was whether to do it or not. I was the only person who answered the way he would have handled the situation: build it, enjoy it 20 years, then sell to someone who didn't know better! LOL But it's not like I had the money to risk. Just answer the question... You know, that's what is so nice about fiction. You can do things you wouldn't dare attempt in real life but jump upon wholeheartedly in the little worlds you create. So, nice to meet you, Goddess Corrina. Wendy Doniger O'Taherty's OTHER PEOPLES' MYTHS is one of those wonderful places you can sit back and pluck a new twist for a wip you're typing... What do I mean? First of all, "other" people's myths says it all. Peer into another reality with this reference book. How you ask? Here are the quite intriguting chapter titles for clarification:

Otherwise, you will enjoy this book's angle on myth from every major religion and more. It felt like I was reading an interesting version of Campbell's THE HERO WITH A 1000 FACES. Although incredibly helpful, Campbell's book put me to sleep. However, his video version THE HERO'S JOURNEY did not. I highly recommend that DVD to all writers. ~Skhye

THE SCOTTISH HIGHLANDERS AND THEIR REGIMENTS~

Michael Brander's THE SCOTTISH HIGHLANDERS AND THEIR REGIMENTS is loaded with information on Highland regiments--how the Crown dispensed with Scotsmen aside from dumping them into various wildernesses around the globe. Maybe we think of serving in a regiment as noble when it's essentially the noble deportation of a man cloaked in hero's garb? Alas, my bias surfaces here... And I must move on. If you're writing about pre-18th Century Highlanders, this book may have a twist a two you can weave into your tale. And don't forget to read John Prebble. CREATING A WEREWOLF LEGEND

Hello, Skhye. Thank you for having me here today to chat about my research I did to create my werewolf tale, Moon Shifter. Short or long, all tales have a background story. Follow me on my journey in how I discovered my werewolf clan.

There are many werewolf tales from all over the world. I did most of my research on the Internet, reading about different legends and how the werewolf behaved. Some werewolf tales stated the person was cursed, while others swore it was a medical condition and still others claimed it was a tribe of wolf men.

I was fascinated with the Irish werewolf tales and decided my werewolf clan would be from Ireland. The werewolves weren’t beasts that had no control when they shifted. They were a human clan that had the ability to shift into a wolf.

To add to the background story of my Irish wolf clan, I did a little more research about wolves in Ireland. The English are responsible for depleting the forests. The wolves had no home, no place to hunt and turned toward livestock. To survive, the people of Ireland hunted the wolves that roamed on their land. However, Oliver Cromwell was responsible for exterminating thousands of wolves. He gave the order that wolves were not to be exported from the country, but they would be hunted instead for sport. As of today, wolves no longer exist in Ireland.

With my research, I also found an interesting Irish reference to the wolf, giving the animal the name mac tíre (mock tee ra), which translates to means son of the land.

In my story, humans use the term werewolf, but my Irish wolf clan call themselves moon shifters of the Mac Tíre clan.

Now I had a background story. The Mac Tíre escaped from Ireland in 1652 to avoid persecution from Cromwell.

The moon shifters have a human side, but they are also part of the wolf, a fact I didn’t want the reader to forget. Wolves are fascinating animals with their own social structure, including an alpha male and an alpha female to manage the pack. It isn’t uncommon for a female to run the pack. If the wolf chooses a mate, they stay mated for life. I also researched territorial fighting. If a trespasser refuses to leave, the alpha leaders will fight. The wolf pack members on both sides will stand by to see who will win. I intertwined the behavior of the gray wolf with the moon shifter’s attributes to give an authentic feel to the Mac Tíre world.

Moon Shifter takes place in Lake Tahoe. I did some research online, but most of what I wrote about was from experience. Tahoe was a vacation spot for family with special childhood memories. What a better way to revisit the magical place. I combined a few of the hiking trails and a resort layout to set the scene.

Writer's Digest Books' THE WRITER'S COMPLETE FANTASY REFERENCE is something I figured everyone owned. Not my friend. So, I'm sharing it today. If you write about castles, Wiccan or Pagan cults, world cultures, castles, medieval life, or magic, you will find this book intriguing. Even though it was published in '98, the info hasn't changed. Just the pages on castle anatomy reserve this reference book a spot on my bookcase. The chapters on commerce, trade, and love in contemporary fantasy or fantasy races will set your creative thoughts spinning. So, grab a copy--even used if the book is out of print. ~Skhye

Researching Moderns Settings From a Distance

My first published book, Moving In, is set in Madison Wisconsin. I lived in Madison years ago, so had a general idea of what the place is like, but much has changed and I haven’t been back recently. When it came time to do some research, I had to get creative.

I still know a few people who live in Madison. They told me things have changed. For instance, Madison has undergone major renovation since I left. Whole blocks of houses have been taken down to make room for condos and office buildings. Yet, when I asked for details, no one would give me anything specific.

My first stop? Google Maps, http://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&tab=wl

Google Maps can provide you with street names, distances, and placements of the such things as parks and lakes.

You can chose to look at “Map” for a traditional view,

or “Satellite” for a picture,

or “Terrain” for a topographical map.

Map is the easiest if all you want is a street name. Terrain is best for elevations. Satellite will cover most other things. I have used it to determine if there were trees on a particular street, if there were houses or buildings in a particular place, and whether or not someone was likely to get flooded. You can see where the docks are, where the industrial zones are, and what is around the capital building.

I’ll admit, most of what I just mentioned was research for Suzie’s House, the serial posted on my blog (http://www.AliceAudrey.com) from which Moving In came.

Google Maps updates regularly, but can still be as much as a couple of years old. This means a quick check of city archives such as http://www.cityofmadison.com/ might be in order. I found listings of building projects and rules for skateboards there.

No, skateboards aren’t in the book. They were in Suzie’s House, the fictional series on my blog from which Moving In came.

I needed a furniture store for one scene. To start, I went to http://www.yellowpages.com/Madison-WI/Furniture-Stores This provided not only the names of various stores but their locations on a map as well and even, in a few cases, a link to a web site.

The links to web sites were invaluable in determining what the show rooms looked like and the kind of furniture one might find there.

YellowPages.com helped with other setting issues as well. For obvious reasons, I did not dare use a real hospital for the hospital in Moving In. Instead I looked over the three big ones in town, and came up with a name that is a mishmash of two.

Other web sites that have proved useful include newspaper’s sites, web-magazines, and the blogs of people who live there. There are book like Madison by Zane Williams, Zane Wiliams, and Georgene Pomplun, Rand McNally Madison, Wisconsin by Rand McNally and Company, and Insiders' Guide to Madison, WI, 3rd by Genie Campbell and Chris Martell, which can be very helpful, but for simple questions nothing beats Google.

Back to my friends. Having checked over Google Maps to make sure the neighborhood of my setting still existed, I asked for photos. Here are a few they sent me:

RESEARCHING MILITARY SPECIAL OPS

I’ve always loved romantic suspense, especially if it involves military special ops. I know it’s a bit weird (especially since I’m Canadian), but on my nightstand I always have two stacks of books—one romance, and the other U.S. special ops non-fiction. I started out loving the Civil War and devouring everything I could find about it when I was twelve, and somehow it segued into special ops after that. Hey, I’m quirky, what can I say?

    When I decided to start writing romance a few years ago, of course I wanted to write special ops themed romantic suspense. My series with The Wild Rose Press started with Out of Her League (winner 2009 RWA Laurel Wreath award for best romantic suspense), and evolved from there. My second book has just come out in print, and will be available in digital format Feb. 26^th. Cover of Darkness features a SEAL lieutenant and a female social worker named Bryn (from Out of Her League), who also happens to be a belly dancer. Her talents come into play when she’s enlisted to help a CIA contractor catch the terrorist responsible for her father’s death.

    For research, I didn’t just read half a dozen books about SEALs and their training. Nope, I took up belly dance, too. To be honest it was something I’d always wanted to try, but never had the guts to do. See, I’m a former nationally carded fastpitch player. I’m an athlete, not a dancer. I don’t do graceful, and I never liked dancing in general unless I was at a wedding. To say the least, taking up belly dance was a stretch for me. But as it turned out, I loved it so much I started performing with a group, and funny as it might sound, it helped me figure out my heroine Bryn better.

    I’m also deathly afraid of flying, but since my special ops heroes would be horrified (and disgusted) that their creator was too chicken to leave the ground, I forced myself to get on a damn helicopter so the pilot could go through the various aspects of the flight for me, and talk more about flying military operations. It wasn’t a Black Hawk, but it did have rotors and it did indeed leave terra firma despite the fact I thought my heart would stop. After I lived through that experience, I even studied flight manuals to better understand the challenges of flying a helo at night at high altitudes, such as over the Hindu Kush Mountains in Afghanistan. See the effort I went to for these books? Realism is really important to me. Maybe no one reading my books would notice if I got a detail wrong, but I wanted to make sure I did what I could to “get it right”. I hope I’ve done so, within reason.

    After Cover of Darkness, I completed the last three books in the series, each of which featured a special ops hero. I had a great time learning about my heroes’ professions. In the end, I wound up researching SEALs, Rangers, Delta Force operators, Green Berets and then Pararescue Jumpers and Combat Controllers. The last two I became interested in while researching the first series (and you should see the awesome resources I’ve obtained on them!), so of course I decided to use them for my current works in progress. Yeah, another series. I love it when that happens!

    Some of the books I found most helpful during my research were:

    Going Downrange, by Dick Couch (but really, as a former SEAL any of his books are outstanding resources)

    Lone Survivor, by Marcus Luttrell (still my favorite non-fiction book to date, and a story that will stay with you long after you finish the last page. I hear it’s going to be made into a movie soon.)

    Kill Bin Laden, by Dalton Fury (great source about Delta Force)

    Inside Delta Force, by Eric Haney (amazing detailed resource)

    Ghost Wars, by Steve Coll (details the complicated history of Afghanistan, and explains why a even a modern military campaign there is so extremely complex and difficult)

    Maybe that kind of reading is too dry for you. Hey, we’re not all quirky as I am, right? Maybe movies or TV shows would suit you better. Want to get into a soldier’s head space a little bit, or maybe understand military culture a bit better? Try watching Generation Kill or Band of Brothers (about the WWII Normandy campaign, but it’s great at showcasing how men work together under the stress of combat), and The Unit (about Delta Force). I think the best movies I’ve seen recently about the current wars in the Middle East are The Hurt Locker, Traitor (incredible movie! If you haven’t seen it, rent it ASAP!), and The September Tapes (though that one’s darn depressing, even for me). There’s one coming out in March called Green Zone, and I’m salivating over it J. Frontline has some good documentaries about the insurgencies in Iraq and Afghanistan, and I always watch for interview on CNN with military officials. Learning about the changing conflict within these war zones, as well as the history of the people and geography there, is as important as studying the soldiers fighting in them.

    I realize this weird interest of mine might make me seem bloodthirsty to people that don’t know me, but I promise nothing could be further from the truth. I’m a total cream puff pacifist, “why can’t we all just get along” kind of gal. No one in my family knows how I came to be interested in all this hard core military stuff, but they all agree it’s weird and completely opposite to my personality.

    I think the subject interests me so much because I have a great deal of respect for soldiers and their capabilities. Especially for special ops soldiers. And I also have a great deal of respect for the families left stateside when they deploy. That’s one of the issues I explore in my romantic suspense series, and my hat is off to anyone at home waiting for news of their loved one overseas in a war zone. Especially for families of special ops personnel, the waiting must be agonizing because they never know where their loved ones are, what’s going on or when they’ll be home. And when (if) they do come back, these men can’t tell their families about the bulk of what happened during their deployment. To be honest, as a wife I’m not sure I could handle it.

    Bottom line for me, I wanted to do my heroes justice. Yes, it’s fiction, but I wanted it to be good fiction, with enough truth in the story to make it plausible. I wanted to make it as realistic as possible and include certain details to highlight not only the dangerous work special ops soldiers take on, but also to highlight their incredible skill sets. Not to mention the sheer resolve and willpower they have to even make it through their training in the first place. (I know for a fact I’d curl up like a boiled shrimp after about two days of sleep deprivation, so count me out.)

Writing Native-American stories or paranormal tales with a Native-American character or revolving around lunar legends? You'll want to grab Joseph Bruchac and Jonathan London's THIRTEEN MOONS ON TURTLE'S BACK: a Native-American Year of Moons. This is a slim YA publication that translates well into cultural studies.

On the back of a turtle are 13 facets to his shell... 13 lunar months exist in a solar year. I think my favorite moon is the MOON WHEN WOLVES RUN TOGETHER. Since Bruchac is now my favorite Native-American author, I have to blog about this book. Of course, there certainly are many other Native-American lunar interpretations. Belize~

To all of my writing friends and the curious reader, here's a documentary on Belize. If you're wip deals with the area, check this out to weave a little realism into your work. I appreciate the recent history lesson and the environmental issues... Oh, and I like how they describe the sea as a woman. I'll have to give Daddy the credit for finding this gem. He's been retired forever and frequently spends his vacation chugging beers while driving golf carts around Belize. Apparently, you can't kill yourself recreating in this manner! Thomas Elliot Norton's THE FUR TRADE IN COLONIAL NEW YORK 1686-1776 is a book that can truly shape your colonial wip. How? From the history of capitalism to the meaning of the word "buck," you will find all sorts of wonderful information to weave into your colonial fiction. Not only was I as big a fan of mountain men as you know I am of Native Americans, I read this book for entertainment as much as I used the period details in THE FUR TRADE IN COLONIAL NEW YOUR on one of those epic sagas I'll never go back and touch with a ten-foot pole... Why? I've experienced closure and moved on. LOL. But for you and anything I might have on the wip back burner, the following chapters are packed with everything we can use to create a colonial political economy. However, I don't recall much ideological info in this treasure. I highly recommend you read up on the religions of the day. And if you want to know about Native Americans of the NE, look no further.
